                                             ...On the Death Penalty

       "The purpose of Buddhism is to bring out the Buddha nature that all people inherently possess, to awaken people to it and enable them to attain Buddhahood. Moreover, the lotus sutra does not allow for any discrimination; all people are equally entitled to salvation" (Ikeda, 2012).

        Let's talk about Pedophiles. What does the word Pedophile means? The etymology of this word is the following: Circa, 1900-1910 It derives from the Greek word pais generally known as paidos. Pedos means Child, and philos means loving, as in Pedophilos.

Pedophilia is applied to most adults, men and women, who sexually molest children are considered to have pedophilia, a mental disorder described by the American Psychiatric Association's, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fourth Edition (DSM-IV).       An adult who engages in sexual activity with a child is performing a criminal and immoral act which never can be considered normal or socially acceptable behavior. Pedophilia is categorized in the DSM-IV as one of the several paraphilia mental disorders. The essential features of paraphilia ("sexual deviation") are recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors that generally involve nonhuman subjects, the suffering or humiliation of oneself or one's partner, or children or other non-consenting persons.

Now that we know the etymology and the definition of the word, let's talk about the social construction of a pedophile.

                                       The Social Construction of a Pedophile:

                 Seventh year old graders arrive at school everyday, with different faces, yet the same developmental stages. Adolescent development and behavior has been the theoretical landmark of Erickson's developmental stages (Erickson, 1980). Taking into account the theoretical influence of Freud's developmental stages (Freud, 1940), and Piaget (Piaget, 1975), we can easily use them as a map in the explanation of how a pedophile is socially constructed.

     Let's go back to the seventh graders, shall we? There you have a school full of raging adolescents, confused, curious, desperate, a lot of them with different social, emotional, intelligent, and developmental backgrounds. Let's take one group of seventh graders from their Junior High School. What is the first thing that you see you walk inside of their classroom? The first thing that we see is the diversity, the race, skin color, therefore the physical appearance.

Once in the classroom, who is the person with authority and control? Who is the ruler of the classroom realm? Who is the mentor? Who is the master? The Teacher.

        The Teacher figure, whether you want to accept it or not, is one of the most influential force in the life of students. In this crucial period, this is of great importance. Let's take a Mathematics' Male teacher for example. A 35 year old mature male, who teaches Arithmetic to these seven graders, and engages in sexual conduct with his young female students (ranging from ages 11 to 13).

       He was perceived as a cool guy, a nice teacher, who almost never gave class, always joking around in the classroom. The male students wanted to be him, as cool as him. The female students thought he was so dreamy. Lizalia was her name, they called her Lissy. A blonde 7th grader, with green eyes and too much black eyeliner for her own good. She always wore red lipstick and her eyes were always masked behind the damned thick rimmed black eyeliner.   
     But he...he was like a damned sausage link. He was short, and had a beer belly, short arms and legs, and a mole in his face, in his left cheek. Why did the students thought he was so cool?     

     Manipulation is the answer. He knew how to control them and manipulate them. The first thing that he did, and always did, was to project himself as he wanted them to see him. "I only give you what you need, I only let you see what I want you to believe"; this was his motto, sang out loud in class, written on the blackboard, so revealing and yet misunderstood by the children, for none of them asked the meaning of that quote, not even an explanation.
      Day by day Lissie bragged about her sexual encounters with the math teacher. The other girls listened, they were curious, and interested, because they wanted to experiment, they wanted to know how it felt. Lissy  rounded them up for him. Instead of going to the slumber party their parents had agreed upon, they ended at the math teacher's house having a party of their own. The math teacher would also invite other male students, and other men and women from outside of town. To the students this was a model, a mentor, a master, and these activities would continue to take place until he retired.
   The social construction of this pedophile lies in his role as a teacher. The institution of education is the most powerful institution, that has shaped society as a whole since children are bread, born, raised. The institution of education is a social institution that regulates the behavior of children for the sole purpose of creating order and ultimately control them for the benefit of a determined society.

        The Math teacher was socially constructed by the Educational Institution in the same manner that he had been instructing his own students. By using pedagogy, psychology, sociology, sexuality, and many other educational influences provided by the Social Institution of Education, he had mastered the art of captivating and manipulating a specific crowd: Junior High school Student's (Ages 11 to 16). He had the total attention of the students for 2 hours everyday, 5 days a week for three years of their life. It was during those 2 hours that he had the opportunity to bend and shape their minds as he wanted. What he wanted was: to fulfill his sexual needs, desires and paraphilia's, and is exactly what he did.
Now, what about the students? Lizzie had gotten pregnant during the Christmas break and had dropped out of the seventh grade, a year later, there were rumors spreading around that she had A.I.D.S. and was never seen again. Before her disappearance Lizzie had kept going to the math teacher house parties, until the moment she had vanished.

The Math Teacher: The Social Construction of a Pedophile

      The Math teacher, 35 years old, was single and lived in a 4 bedroom house in La Joya, a secluded neighborhood, with sufficient space between every land property. The space was so sufficient that not one neighbor ever suspected there were house parties every weekend and the comings and goings during the week, of mostly 7th graders (ages 11-12). He did send his mother to a convalescent home for seniors in the next town, therefore he lived at his mother's house. He had come out of college, straight back home, to work at the school which he attended during the seventh grade. He had tasted independence from the claws of his mother, and wanted desperately to feel it again once more. His mother was on his way, and he truly took care of everything.

       A son of an alcoholic womanizer town mechanic father, and a welfare secretary/social worker mother, he was an only child, often mirroring his father's behavior around young 7 to 12 year old girls. "His cousins, his father would say, were beautiful and precious" It was his duty to admire them, protect them and love them unconditionally. An alcoholic delirious father was a handful for the whole family, especially his perfectionist mother. In one of many of a family gatherings, his father had gotten drunk in a game of wife swap. They had arrived with the kids: brothers, sisters, and friends. The kids were in their own area, watching movies, playing in the company of their older siblings, while their parents had their own area. As soon and the parents arrived, they had to deposit their car keys in a crystal bowl. At the end of the party, each person had to reach into the bowl of car keys and leave with the owner. It wasn't and option, it was mandatory. His father had done this many times before, his mother had participated along with him. Some of the women had gotten in his car along with their children, because they had to be driven back home. Along the way the children would sleep in the backseat innocently, oblivious to the unexpected traumatic event. They would be put to their beds, except for those who were worthy enough of his admiration, protection, and love.     
        To those, he would introduce them to his "loving" ways. Oddly enough these children would always follow him, cherish him and adore him, even more so than his own family. His wife was mistreated, abused, denigrated, pissed upon, cheated on, raped upon, by him, and ultimately herself, ended up a widow that last key exchange party. His father had gone with a woman much younger than him and with a pair of exotic long dark haired, dark eyes, fair skin, 6 year old twins. It was the first party this single mother had attended, and she had to leave with his father. They had arrived there earlier, and when his father, appeared, the twins immediately jumped on top of his lap, begging to be admired, protected, and loved by him. His father was enjoying the moment, and to the common eye, he even appeared as a good man, a good father, a good husband, a good community leader. His drunkenness was hidden behind a masquerade outside of the home, yet at home, he was a sociopath drunken alcoholic. People loved him, everyone knew him, and listened to what he had to say. "I tell you what you want to hear, and I give you what you think you want", this was his motto, carved into this math teacher's mind. This was his developmental stage, he was assimilating, accommodating, and going through different levels of learning, by doing, by observing, and by modeling this motto.
     That night during the party he had noticed how his father operated, and he was jealous of him, for he wanted the attention of his cousins, but most of all, he wanted to compete for his father's attention, and acceptance (he wanted to be his father), and he hated him as well. He wanted to be that side of his father: the public side, the girl-loving side, not the husband, and certainly, not the father. Deep in his mind he knew that he would never marry a woman, nor he wanted to care for children. That was the last night he an his mother saw his father alive. He saw them all riding in the front seat of the car. The twins in the middle of them, the four of them all huddled up for no reason.
     Before they had gone, the twins were playing with him. He was admiring, protecting, and loving them, the three mottos that his father had installed upon him. His father gave him a look of wonder and praise, for the first time in his life he was doing things right -he thought- "finally he's going to see what I'm capable of". His father bid him farewell with heavy approval, leaving him fully satisfied; and as he saw his father leave, he felt that the end was near, the twins eyes, dark and big revealed it to him.

     The black sunshine mustang was riding in full throttle, its fluorescent eyes illuminating the dark road. The sound of the engine provided vibrating stimuli to the passengers, still all huddled up,  closer than ever before. The dark haired twins wrapped themselves around the math teacher's father. His waist was occupied by the twins, their eyes now darker than ever before hypnotized him. He forgot about his destination, he forgot about his destiny. When the woman saw a bit of confusion in his eyes, she said gently: "drive away, let the road be your guide". He saw an endless road, never ending, never disparaging, always to be driven by him, restless, in an insomniac coma. He disappeared into a road of nothingness, bitterly facing his end in the land of the living, entering another stratosphere of delusions that awaited him. In four lower words he dwelled from that moment onward: Hell, Animality, Hunger and Anger, all forever encompassing, enveloping him, indubitably making him feel everything his victims felt.

     The Math teacher was more than happy to know about his father's disappearance. His mother seemed more at ease, she was free of his alcoholism, sadism and vices. She could save more money, and the money that she had hidden over the years was used towards his college tuition. After his father's disappearance his mother never remarried, she was ill most of the time, but kept on working until her retirement. He learned after his college graduation that his mother had dementia due to syphilis. This prompted him to take extreme measures: he arranged for her to vacate her home and live in a convalescent home for seniors until her last days.

   He was free again from her fully, he was free to pursue any pleasures he deemed fit. He remembered during his college years how many girls he had savored, all of them much younger than him. His methods were to cruise around high schools and junior high schools outside of his living area. He always had nice automobiles, these were crucial for the first stage: impressing and image of coolness upon young girls. He staked the schools, he stalked the girls, observed and analyzed their behavior in search for a troubled teen, preferably with low self esteem, attractive and most of all, a virgin. He made exceptions all the time, he had to, a virgin teenage girl was hard to find. His exceptions were extreme, for he took upon himself to oblige the girls to test themselves for STD's, and other diseases. He wanted to keep himself clean, and that, he did very well. He always thought he was performing a public duty, breaking girls, teaching them how to be women, revealing the dark secrets that they desperately desired, the dark secrets he need to press upon them.

    During his college years he had many classmates, yet he never engaged in a relationship with any college women. He portrayed an image of academic excellence, always using that as an excuse for not having a "girlfriend". He kept his secret safe, no one knew his sexual paraphilia's.
Looking back upon the story of his life, he felt complete, accomplished and with a great sense of peace. He is in his comfort zone, and no one will escape his twisting desires.
